Black River Cleanup
Black River
I asked why the Black River is black, and I received
three different answers.
And I have a fourth: When I was in school, they told me that the Black River was
black because the Sugar Estates dumped the residue from sugar cane processing into the river and it settled at the bottom of the river. And there are probably other answers.
My reason for asking the question is that the Black River is Jamaica’s largest fresh water source and it is, pretty much, unusable.
Is it a problem that can be corrected? So what if it takes a hundred years?
We need to do it, if not for us, but for future generations. We owe it to them.
Let’s get the scientific community together to look at the problem and make a determination if the problem can be fixed.
The Aquaculture, recreational, farming benefits will pay for whatever it costs.
And we will have drinking water for the future.
